Alright... SOOO... I posted about TGTW a few months ago, but the details were not a lot! SOO, TODAY I SHALL SHARE... CHAPTER 1!!!!!

Chapter 1 Adnar

Adnar paced the hall of the palace. He plugged his ears again to all the screams coming from the room. His bedchamber, that was now being used as a birthing room. Elena, his wife- treasure and love, was in the middle of giving birth. He crinkled his nose at the thought of blood being mixed into his sheets.

He shook the feeling, a small smile crossing his face. He hoped that once all this was over, Elena would be alright, but it had already been so long. Already 8 hours labour.

Another shriek and groan wafted into his ears. He winced, grimacing at the reminder. The reminder that his beautiful queen was still in this mess. Sighing, he absentmindedly walked over and thudded down into a nearby wooden chair.

Exhausted, weary, and worried for Elena’s safety, he glanced up at the clock on the wall of the hall. Each tick making him more and more weary, and also, building up more and more tension upon the palace and everything and everyone in it. Soon, Adnar’s eyes grew heavy, and they gave way, putting him into a numbing sleep...

Adnar awoke, his eyes fluttered open and focused on his surroundings of the hall.

He glanced at the clock. It had only been an hour since he had fallen asleep. He sighed, more weary than before. Cause all of this was still real. Very real.

And when he had woken up, he could feel a different air to the hall. Thicker, heavier. The tension was rising. So high in fact that someone could have cut it with a knife. Adnar felt the air fill his lungs and give him the same feeling as the hall felt. He fell backwards into the chair, clutching his chest. It was such a mighty force.

The hall held its breath... then... a final scream came from the chamber. And then an ear splitting cry. A baby’s cry. And even the young king understood that. He jumped up from the chair. Not sure what to do. Go to the room? Knock on the door?

Suddenly, as if asked to, the door flew open. Margaret, Elena’s midwife with snappy brown eyes, dark hair up, a wrinkle in her brow, and a sharp nose, stood at the entrance of the door a few feet away, holding something that looked like a tiny bundle of blankets in her arms.

With somewhat of a scowl on her face, she walked swiftly to the king. Adnar was too stunned to put a scowl on his own face. Although he and Margaret didn’t get along with anything, he still was happy to see SOMEONE, anyone!

He took a deep breath.

Margaret raised an eyebrow proudly as she walked to stand before him.

“You now have a child young king.” She said loudly, for all to hear, servants and all.”

Adnar gasped, stunned at the news. Margaret laid the baby into his arms. It took a while, a few scoffs and eye rolls form Margaret, and the baby was in his arms.

Adnar then he felt a warmth settle deep into his heart. A sort of love he had never felt before. He looked down at this baby, this child... that was...his. His sigh shook him nervously, and soon, Margaret snatched the baby back.

She turned on her heel with a huff and turned her head to signal the young king to follow.

Tentatively, Adnar walked behind Margaret into the the temporary birthing room. When he entered, he noticed first that his huge canopy bed had been covered with a large, swishing dirty rag sheet. It was nailed onto the top of the canopy roofing edge and it hung all the way down to the dark floorboards.

Margaret ordered for Adnar to sit in a chair in the corner of the room. She then placed the baby girl back into his arms and walked away. She walked up the steps to the bed that was on a large wooden platform. She swept the sheet just a sliver wide and peered in, nodding to the new mother.

Then the baby started to squirm.

Her hazel eyes sparkled with mischief and tiny playful tufts of curled brunette hair spiked up from her tiny head.

Adnar gasped when she started to whine, but when he rocked her and she calmed down his nerves calmed down as well. They looked into each other’s eyes. Sharing a moment that would shape this baby girls entire life. They would be the best of friends. Adnar could already tell.

As his baby started to drift off, fluttering her eyelids closed, his focus was back on the bed. Mary a young servant girl had come in and, standing atop a high stool, pulled the nails out and tossed the sheet off of the hooks. It fluttered gracefully in a pile of linen into her arms.

She pushed it into the crook of one arm and used the other to get herself off the stool. She then smiled at the king and walked into the laundry room next to where his chair sat.

The glow from the laundry room allowed light to dance next to him, pasting a shadow of the baby on the floor. He gulped back tears. His wife was safe. And his baby girl was the best thing that could have ever happened to him- aside from her mother.

Adnar then looked up at the bed. Now that the sheet had been removed he could clearly see Elena. Her dark brunette hair- almost as dark as her daughter’s- was swept over her face, and her usual bright, happy complexion was dampened with drips of sweat. Her breathing was heavy and each breath was hard work. Adnar smiled softly at her. He was proud of her. Of what she had endured to bring such beauty from that kind of pain.

He rested his head against the wall. Even as servants bustled softly around him, he felt silence rest over him. And soon, he matched his daughters breathing and fell asleep himself.

Adnar jerked awake. The baby was crying softly and he jolted at the noise. Once he had calmed her down, cooing and shushing, he blinked around at his surroundings. Elena was still on the bed, but only a few servants were still present. Of course Margaret stood beside the bed, wiping a damp cloth on the queens face, and holding her face in her hands. Soon she turned and walked into the laundry room with young Mary the last of the servants to clean everything before it stained, leaving the new family alone.

Once Adnar had gathered up the courage, he stood with the baby and walked slowly and steadily to the bed. Elena moved as if full of rust. So slowly. So tiredly. Adnar pursed his lips and then slid up a chair. He sat next to the bed. Silently, but still present.

He rocked the baby back and forth, and hummed a lullaby to her.

Then, Elena’s sweet melodic voice whispered the words,

“Sleep baby, sleep, fall into a world where you can sleep, rock, crib, rock, and fall this baby to sleep...”

When the song ended, the couple smiled to one another. Elena’s eyes, half closed still shone brightly with joy. Adnar smiled and sighed.

  “She’s... beautiful.”

Elena slowly moved closer to the edge of the bed. Nodding she said,

  “She is gorgeous.”

After a long pause, Elena said,

  “I love you.”

Adnar’s heart softened. A light switch switched on. Something called loyalty and protecting his beautiful girls was now embedded into his head. His heart. He loved them more than anything. He would die for them. Both. And he new that they loved him.

How much more perfect could a family be?

Elena

Elena sighed, and curled deeper into the velvet seat seated at the large fireplace in the royal bedroom. She twisted a piece of her long chestnut hair. She stared deeper into the fire, catching the way it danced.

The wood crackled and a piece that held the pieces up, fell, sending sparks flying. She sighed again.

Adnar sat a few feet away, at his desk, penning out a message to his general. The call for him to aid his armies in the war had grown stronger, and he now had many letters to answer. But there was another war going on.

Between the king and his queen. The dark purple’s, blues and blacks around the room gave a dark light to it, and only the fire gave a warm tint. Finally Elena broke the silence,

“Adnar, please, we need to talk about this.”

Adnar scribbled harder and leaned deeper into the paper on the desk. Finally he leaned back still penning, then answered,

“Fine. What do you want it talk about?”

His voice held a gruff tone.

Elena inhaled, keeping her anger in check and let it out again.

“About our daughter. We need to name her. People are beginning to talk. And... I can’t stand it!”

Adnar raised an eyebrow, rolled his eyes and stared back down at the message. Sighing he stood, and turned to the window.

“How about ELSA?”

His voice was clear, and the words were simple. Almost too simple. Elsa? Elsa?

“Elsa…? Named from the queen who still lives in the enchanted woods?”

Elena, sweet Elena, she never had wanted to name any of her children such a legendary name. But now it seemed that her husband had different intentions.

“Why not?”

His tone didn’t change. He was still standing there, just standing, staring into nothing. It was starting to scare Elena. What if this was his final decision?

All of her dreams for sweet, beautiful names for her daughter started to disappear. Finally she gathered up the courage to speak.

“What about Astrid? It... it...means beauty...? And there is Hanna, that means grace, Anastasia which means rebirth?”

“Astrid? No! The princess of Norway needs to have a strong name to rule this kingdom. The name must hold... power.”

Adnar had ignored the other names and seemed to be done with the discussion, turning back to his desk, to continue writing. Elena sighed, defeated.

Why did this have to be the way it is?
