Last snippet of chapter 1

My feet felt heavier than two large elephants. As I solemnly walked back to the train station, I looked up into

the starry night.

“Why God? Why are you letting this happen?

I spent my life savings on getting to school, getting my masters, and even being an archaeologist

for the Madaba Plains project in Jordan! So why? “

My voice screeched in agonizing whimpering.

“I guess I’d better call Mr. Dalton and tell him that he’ll have to find someone else.”

Looking around for a phone booth at the station, I unfortunately couldn’t spot one.

“If I go back to the one around the block I’ll miss the train.”

My mumbling echoed through my eardrums. Finally a bell went off, indicating my ride.

Picking up my second briefcase, and suitcase, I signaled the trainboy to aid Einstein's crate.

His eyes bulged at the large manor of it.

“Where should I put this? Extra tip if you want him in your cabin.”

Nodding, I handed him a few bucks.

         “Keep the change.”

“Got it. This is pretty hefty. Where are you headed?”

The young man’s straining lifts cracked his voice.

“No matter now. Just take care of the crate. Will you?”

Nodding his curly brunette locks, he turned to put Einstein in my cabin.

As I followed, I scoped

out the layout of the train in case of an emergency, or

just if I wanted a snack that wouldn’t take me fifteen minutes to get.

Setting the crate to the floor, the trainboy admired the cooped up Saint Bernard.

“See ya later. By the way, the name’s Toby.”

       “Thank you for the help.”

Licking my lips, I glanced at him with a smile. Toby left me with my thoughts.

Locking my cabin, I flipped open Einstein's crate, and curled up with his furry hide for a

long nap.
